Like 16 million other people in the UK (mostly in England I guess) I was glued to my TV yesterday watching the Lionesses pull off a magnificent, if slightly surprising, win.
I’m a pretty avid football fan, and I took my family to the 2022 final at Wembley, which was amazing. But if I’m honest, I don’t really take that much of an interest in women’s football on a weekly basis.
It’s the big question around big sporting moments like this: can it translate into a sustained increase in popularity for the sport, once the tournament excitement fades away?
And for brands thinking about jumping into women’s football now: does this win mean an inevitable increase in popularity of the WSL, or will most of that interest fade away again until the next big tournament?
The truth is, we don’t yet know.
But in an attempt to partially answer the question, I’ve looked at some GWI data to find out how the Women’s Euros audience in the UK currently compares to followers of the WSL and the Men’s Euros.
